Patience

There is no evil like hatred.
And no fortitude like patience. –Santideva, “Bodhicaryavatara”

I work hard at keeping the “hate” word out of my language. It slips on occasion when the discussion turns to Brussel Sprouts, but it really has no place in our vocabulary, especially when we are talking about other human beings.

Patience on the other hand is a work in progress even at my age. In fact as we become older, patience is something that  needs more attention not less.

People ask what about injustice. Shouldn’t we hate injustice and have no patience with it as well. The answer is yes, but we can find a better way to express our need to fight injustice. Like cancer, hate tends to grow and spread. Its best it never enters the system.

Patience on the other hand is like love. When we practice and engage in patience, it is contagious in the best of ways.
