Birthdays and Change

People on your birthday ask, “How does it feel to be __ years old?”

My answer has changed over the years, but an answer that is honest is simply, “I’ve changed.” Now, I’ve experienced changes, some rather dramatic over the years, and I’ve learned that each change is part of my formation, part of God’s sculpture that continues to be a work in progress.
Change— It’s scary, it’s hard and certainly in my case is needed. Sometimes it is painful. But one thing for sure: it keeps on happening. Just when our life seems settled, it changes. We can’t stop life. We can’t stay one age forever. The same is true for all. And there is an exciting part— there are always new things to do and learn. Changes mean we’re always beginners.
We need to pray for wisdom and courage during life’s changes, and do what we can to accept all change with grace and humility.
So the answer is for us all, “I’ve changed, and it is up to me whether the change is for the better or the worst.”
