Topping Off

Before there were things such as automatic shut off nozzles and warnings about “topping off” would ruin your fuel system, I admit to being one who “topped off.” I had it in my mind that those few extra drops of fuel would prevent me from running out of gas down the road.

Great athletes know that in clutch time one can’t expect to be able to call on something that’s not in the tank already. A basketball player practices free throws hour after hour so when its clutch time exhaustion and pressure aren’t a factor in making the game winning free throw. A great golfer practices three-foot putts day after day until his hands become arthritic. Why, so pressure and exhaustion aren’t a factor when lining up the winning  putt.
My friend Rob reminds me that Gandhi said that, “Non-violence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. It’s seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being.”
In this world of misery and disappointment there isn’t always a filling station just around the corner. Take every opportunity Life offers you to “fill up on God’s love” and never be concerned about “topping off.”
