Magic and Mystery

There are very few of us who don’t enjoy magic tricks and a well performed magic act. Part of us wants to know how the magician does it — we want to unravel the mystery. Then there is another part of us that just enjoys the show — we would rather not know how it is done, unlocking the mystery would take away the fun.

My friends in EFM remember how much I enjoy the mystery of our faith. Our relationship with God is in some ways like our enjoyment of magic and mystery. Part of us wants to intellectualize God’s existence and understand every bit of why he allows certain things to happen and how he created the heavens. There is another part of us that simply enjoys the mystery. For example, we don’t need to know why we have honeysuckle, we just enjoy its smell, beauty, and the taste of honey it produces. We don’t need to know more.
What’s even stranger is that a lot of times we seem to want to know all about the wrong things, and don’t enjoy the things we are meant to simply enjoy. Maybe knowing the difference is one of the most important thing we can are called to do.
