The Ashes of Memory

Like the sailor who watches his home shore gradually disappear, I watch my past recede. — The Diving Bell & the Butterfly, Jean Dominique Bauby
Sometimes we make a mistake so tragic that we pay for it over and over again, even though over time we can no longer remember what we did or why.
I was asked recently whether it is as important to forget as well as forgive. I answered that God always forgives, we are always called to forgive, especially ourselves, but it is not necessary or even healthy to forget. Time and wisdom will do that all on their own.
