The Gift of Rain

Thanks to my good friend Mary’s book club I finally read “A Gift of Rain” by Tang Eng. Its a high recommend.

The protagonist is told by a soothsayer that he was born with the gift of rain. For most of his life he believes it is a curse. In Malaysia rain can bring tragedy into peoples lives. As his life unfolds he also realizes rain may be a blessing. It brings relief, clarity, and renewal.
I told the people at Good Shepherd this weekend that I believed that out of tragedy and descent we get closer to God, learn more about ourselves, and learn more from mistakes than our successes.
When Jesus proclaimed the beattitudes I always read them as being in the future, being in the next life in heaven. With the wisdom age brings I am learning that Christ isn’t talking about the future but the present.
This realization causes one to have a whole new perspective on life and faith. It’s all a matter of attitude and perspective.
