First Sunday In Lent

A person wrote in and asked, “Why do you seem to enjoy Lent so much. Isn’t Lent supposed to be a somber time?”

Maybe my excitement is gained from the wisdom of many Lents and many failures. Each time that oatmeal-raisin cookie finds its way into my mouth, I know God gets a big smile on his face, reaches down with his huge hands and with love, mercy, and forgiveness he dusts me off and says, “Now, try again.” It reminds me of one of my favorite coaches whose words weren’t exactly gentle or kind, but the message was the same, we are going to keep doing this until you “get it right.”
Lent is about practicing until we “get it right.” We learn to give up self-indulgence ways and indifference to others, until “getting it right” is part of our nature. It is then we learn what it is like to be close to God.
At some point this Lent you will wake up and realize “getting it right” is second nature to you. Then you will enjoy every minute of the season.
