Hot Bath

“You can change the world with a hot bath, if you sink into it from a place of knowing you are worth profound care, even when you’re dirty and rattled. Who knew?” — Anne Lamott

Sometimes after we have  been roughed up by the world of public opinion and judgment, or endured a day of abuse and stupid requests to be the person someone else wants us to be, we turn to empty solutions — a half gallon of ice cream, several slugs of bad bourbon, or the company of a man or woman that we know is not good for our health. When in truth all we need is a little love — and not the love found in magazines or on the internet — but love only yourself can provide.

God gives each of us glimpses of our own wonder and beauty. We find these glimpses of the joy of life in real conversations with friends, a nap, singing in the shower, a walk in the woods, or a million other things that we recognize as beautiful moments. When we realize we each have tremendous value despite the bumps and bruises of life we recognize that the opinion we must value the most is our own.
Anne Lamott’s says, “all I ever wanted since I arrived here on earth were the same things I needed as a baby — to go from cold to warm, lonely to held, the vessel to the giver, empty to full.”  When life throws you a pity party, turn it into a celebration — a remembrance of all the beautiful moments you have experienced, and all those you are about to enjoy.
