Drift Away

Oh Give me the beat boys, and free my soul

I wanna get lost in your rock and roll

And drift away.

Anybody who has attended one of those new modern churches that seem to be cropping up everywhere using videos, rock music, and casual attire know that just about any song can be adapted to have spiritual meaning. Or if you’re a little older and remember Whoopee Goldberg in Sister Act you understand what I mean. As I listened to Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs sing his classic composition – Drift Away last Saturday, I couldn’t help but think he had God in mind when he wrote:

Thanks for the Joy that you’ve given me

I want you to know I believe in your song

Your rhythm and harmony

You’ve helped me all along

Makin’ me strong

P.S. Other songs by Maurice you might remember are “Stay” – re-recorded by The Hollies, The Four Seasons, and Jackson Browne and “Little Darlin” which was a hit for the Diamonds.

Every now and then it’s just nice and perfectly fine to get lost in life’s music and drift away.
